Rivers
Leicester stands on the
River Soar, a small river (compared to the
Trent, from which its flows). The Grand Union
Canal joins the Soar at Ayleston. the Soar
is navigable by small craft.
The River Soar in the
Hindu-dominated areas of Leicestershire
UK has been approved as an alternative
holy site to the river Ganges for performing
funeral rites in Britain.
After requests from the Asian community,
the Environment Agency has approved ceremonies
on the river in which the ashes of dead Hindus
and Sikhs are scattered across the water.
Watermead Country Park
is a popular area for
walkers, cyclists, bird watchers and people
who just enjoy the open air. The park is
home to a range of wildlife and is an important
breeding ground for birds such as the oystercatchers
and terns.
